Quilt Out Loud! Episode Notes

August 2010 Episode

Segment 1: What’s Up?

Mark, the Viking and Jodie, with her miniature tatted crown, welcome viewers to Ingebretson’s a charming Scandinavian store, deli and crafts shop all in one! The duo introduce the show and tell a little about the location and Scandinavian traditions. The store has an online shop so, yes, you can buy a helmet just like Mark’s!

Segment 2: Doorknock: Gudrun Erla

Mark and the camera crew travel to Chanhassen, Minnesota to surprise Gudrun Erla at her home and studio. As luck would have it, her mother and father were visiting from Iceland.

Raised In Iceland Gudrun started quilting at the age of 23 and became addicted immediately. She opened the first online quilt shop in Iceland in her basement in the summer of 2000. It quickly grew into a store front. Her husband’s career change brought the family of five to the States in 2003 and Gudrun’s design business has taken off with patterns, books, and fabric.

Gudrun loves quick and easy projects, which can be finished in a short period of time. Her friends call her the shortcut expert, as she is always finding ways to do things quicker and using easier methods. Her “quilt as you go” patterns have been very popular, with easy to follow instructions and quick assembly and finishing. All her patterns are geared toward today’s quilt makers, easy and fast with a stylish touch.

Segments 3: Project with Gudrun Erla

While Mark barged in on Gudrun and her family, Jodie waited in the wings. The interview finishes, Jodie asked Gudrun if she had a project in the works to share with Quilt Out Loud! viewers. Sure enough, Gudrun vanished into her studio for a few minutes to prepare to demonsrate a holiday table runner fro her newest book, “Fast and Furious.” This quilt-as-you-go rick rack runner is perfect for beginners. Since the stitching of the rick rack is also the quilting, the quilting isn’t at all intimidating. For time savers, Gudrun uses fusible fleece and basting glue.

Segments 4: Quiltspiration

Jodie and Mark join a group of knitters in the shop’s classroom as they knit hats for homeless teenagers. As the pile in the center of the table builds, Jodie and Mark present the Scandinavian-inspired blocks they created.

The Ingebretson’s online shop has an entire page of Dala horses and Dala-themed gifts!

And you can buy a Krumkake machine. (The staff recommends the electric model.)

Segment 5 and 6: Book Review and Scandinavian Products at Ingebretsen’s

The store is filled with inspiration, and the location for the book review is way in the back. So what started as just a book review ended up being much more. Mark and Jodie plopped themselves on the floor with their arms and baskets full of delights they had found in the shop, and just had to share.
